Visually, the opera belongs to Marilyn and the 1950’s, but makes strong references to the present day through the cut of the design, costumes and movement. We also played with a number of abstract elements to represent the psychological impact of fame. We explored the idea of ‘skin’, and use a translucent ‘tissue’ screen to show Violetta’s desire for freedom and a different sort of life. We played with body-image distortion, and the polarisation between the natural, holistic world of love, and the neon, synthetic world of pleasure.
